Choosing a hearing aid should not feel like a gamble, yet for many people, that is exactly what it becomes. You are handed a device, told this is the one, and left wondering if there is a better option. The truth? There is not a one-size-fits-all answer. But there is a best fit for you. And it all starts by understanding the most common styles of hearing aids: Receiver-In-Canal (RIC) (or Receiver-In-The-Ear (RITE)), Behind-The Ear (BTE) and In-the-Ear (ITE) (also referred to as custom hearing aids). This guide will walk you through what each style offers, what to watch out for, and how to make a choice that is smart, personal, and pressure-free.

BTE vs. RIC vs. ITE Hearing Aids: Which Style Fits Your Lifestyle? The Hearing Aid Showdown: Receiver-In-Canal vs. In-the-Ear vs. Behind-The-Ear

What are the main styles or shapes of hearing aids? When it comes to modern hearing aids, most fall into three major categories:

  • Receiver-In-Canal (RIC): These rest discreetly behind the ear and deliver sound via a thin wire. They are known for their comfort, and more natural sound.
  • Behind-The-Ear (BTE): These sit behind the ear and have either a thin or thick tube to deliver sound down into the ear canal. This style is useful for hearing losses which require high volume and for some ear canal and middle ear pathologies.
  • In-the-Ear (ITE): Custom-molded to fit inside the ear, custom devices come in various sizes, from larger models such as the In-The-Ear which fills the ear canal and most of the outer ear, to In-The-Canal (ITC) which has a lower profile but still sits out of the ear canal and in the outer ear and the Completely-In-Canal (CIC) which is very discreet and sits entirely in the ear canal. The smallest custom hearing aid style is the Invisible-in-Canal  (IIC).

All styles serve different hearing needs, listening goals, ear anatomy and lifestyles. Each hearing aid style has also evolved dramatically over time. Some hearing aid styles include features such as Bluetooth streaming and being rechargeable.

Key Differences in Fit, Size and Visibility

Behind-The-Ear (BTE) hearing aids are more noticeable than Completely-In-Canal (CIC) devices but can accommodate more features, such as Bluetooth. BTE devices are ideal for  hearing losses which require high volume, individuals with dexterity issues and individuals who are poor candidates for other hearing aid styles.

CIC hearing aids, on the other hand, are praised for their discreet appearance. They are popular among people who value aesthetics, especially those who wear glasses or prefer not to feel something behind their ears.

Factors That May Influence Your Choice of Hearing Aid Style

  • Dexterity

  • If you have been fitted with a hearing aid previously and what style that device was

  • Vision

  • Do you wear glasses or a mask?

  • Do you have regular ear infections or discharge?

  • Are you doing lots of sports?

Common Mistakes People Make When Choosing a Hearing Aid

Some first-time hearing aid wearers allow their decision to be influenced by misinformation. Others skip the proper hearing test and end up with mismatched devices, too much amplification, poor fit, or underperforming features. The biggest mistake? Visiting a retailer tied to just one manufacturer. You need independence and clinical insight to make the right choice. Want guidance that is brand-free and Gold Coast local? What Most Hearing Aid Retailers Will Not Tell You

Most national chains are owned by hearing aid manufacturers, so their advice is biased. Their goal? Sell their product. At Advanced Hearing Aid Centre, we are proudly independent. That means we assess your hearing loss, budget, lifestyle and ear condition. We will then recommend the best option for you.

Advanced Hearing Aid Centre Has a Patient-First Approach

We have built a reputation across the Gold Coast and regional NSW.  We help even the most inexperienced hearing aid wearers become confident hearing aid wearers, who are able to meet their listening goals. Many of our patients are return wearers, people who gave up on hearing the people around them, until they came to us.
