The Advanced Hearing Aid Centre team is committed to making a difference to anyone concerned about or experiencing hearing loss. We recommend that all adults go for a hearing test at least once per year, regardless of whether or not they’re noticing any symptoms of hearing loss. Here’s what to expect from your hearing tests on the Gold Coast.

Detailed History

Like most medical appointments, you will begin by filling out the relevant paperwork and giving a detailed medical history. You’ll want to be as thorough as possible, listing any previous medical conditions, procedures, injuries, medications, supplements, etc.

Describing Any Symptoms

If you’re experiencing any hearing loss symptoms, now is the time to explain them. Symptoms of hearing loss can include:

  • Muffled speech
  • Difficulty understanding words
  • Trouble hearing certain sounds
  • Need to turn up the volume on a television or radio more frequently
  • Ear pain
  • Tinnitus

These are just some possible symptoms of hearing loss. If you are concerned about anything related to your hearing, be sure to bring it up during your appointment.

Physical Ear Exam

Any hearing test should be preceded by an examination of the ear itself, checking your ears for any physical problems that could affect your hearing. This includes examples such as congenital disabilities and earwax buildup, which could hinder or impact the outcome of your hearing test.

Hearing Exam

There are different types of hearing exams. Typically, you’ll move into a sound-treated area to check your hearing by putting on a pair of headphones and undergoing a pure-tone test. A machine called an audiometer makes whistling and beeping sounds (pure tones), and you will have to press a button or raise your hand when you can hear the sounds. This test measures the softest sound you can hear at each frequency.

Test Results Discussion

After your tests have been completed, you will meet with a professional to review your test results and discuss their findings and any relevant recommendations.
